How to Prepare for Your First Sugaring Appointment
Getting your first Brazilian sugaring can feel a little intimidating, especially when you’re not sure what to expect or how to prepare. Whether you’re new to sugaring or making the switch from shaving or waxing, a little preparation can make your appointment more comfortable and help you get the best results for your skin. A few simple steps can make your service more comfortable, minimize hair breakage, and give you better results. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know before your first sugaring appointment, from how long to let your hair grow to what to avoid before and after your service.
Shaving? Wait 2–3 Weeks
If you’ve recently shaved or used a hair removal cream, give your hair at least 2–3 weeks to grow back before your sugaring appointment.
As a general rule, your hair should be at least the length of a grain of rice or longer. If you’re a frequent shaver, we recommend letting it grow a little longer whenever possible. Longer, established growth gives the sugar something to grip and can help reduce unnecessary breakage.
Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before
Gently exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment using a gentle body scrub or exfoliating mitt/glove.
Exfoliation helps slough away dead skin cells, allowing the sugar to better grip the hair and making hair removal easier. It can also help reduce the chance of hair breakage and leave your skin looking brighter and smoother.
Just remember: gentle is the goal. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or exfoliating immediately before your appointment.
Skip the Caffeine Before Your Appointment
To avoid more sensitivity during hair removal, consider skipping caffeine before your appointment. Caffeine, alcohol, and marijuana use may increase sensitivity, which can make your service feel more uncomfortable.
If you know you’re particularly sensitive, keep this in mind when planning your appointment.
Hydrate From the Inside Out
Drink plenty of water before your appointment.
Well-hydrated skin is more flexible, which can help the hair release cleanly from the root. Dehydrated skin can be more prone to sensitivity and hair breakage, which can affect how smooth your results are.
So yes, drink your water! Your skin will thank you.
Skip the Lotions, Oils & Body Butters
Please come to your appointment with clean skin and skip heavy lotions, oils, and body butters beforehand.
We cleanse and prep your skin before sugaring, but heavy product residue, deodorant, oils, and body butters can sometimes remain on the skin and affect how the sugar adheres and performs.
What About Pain Relievers?
If you’re concerned about discomfort, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment at your own discretion and according to the medication’s directions.
If you have questions about whether a medication is appropriate for you, check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
What Should I Wear?
Think loose and breathable.
Loose clothing and cotton underwear, when possible, can help minimize friction after your service. Tight clothing and shapewear can cause chafing against freshly sugared skin, which may lead to irritation, discomfort, and potentially contribute to ingrown hairs.
For a Brazilian sugaring, especially, you’ll want to give your skin some room to breathe afterward.
Can I Get Sugared During My Period?
Absolutely.
You can still receive your sugaring service while on your period. Just keep in mind that hormonal changes can make your skin more sensitive, so your appointment may feel a little different than usual.
For a Brazilian appointment, please arrive with a fresh tampon. Tampons and wet wipes are also provided for your convenience.
What About Pregnancy?
Sugaring during pregnancy can be completely fine for clients who are already accustomed to the service, but you may experience increased skin sensitivity during pregnancy.
If you’re pregnant, please list it on your intake form before your appointment so we can make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout your service.
Your comfort always comes first.
What Should I Expect During My First Sugaring Appointment?
First things first: your first appointment won’t always be your smoothest—and that’s completely normal.
Hair grows in different cycles and directions, which means not every hair is necessarily in the same growth phase when you come in for your appointment. Some hairs may be more established while others are just beginning to emerge.
That’s one reason consistency matters.
With consistency:
Regrowth can become finer
Discomfort can decrease over time
Results can become smoother
Your hair-growth pattern becomes easier to manage
Give your body time to adjust and your hair-growth cycles time to become more predictable.
Trust the process.
